Of course, you can teach a dog to lick your face and they even learn to do it when appropriate however that is not "their way" to show you how they care! I Rescued a Human Today

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the
shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So
many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today.

Dog Bleeds to Death After "Routine" Microchip Implant Procedure
Grieving owner calls for an end to mandatory microchipping in Los
Angeles

A fluffy bundle of life, love, and enthusiasm named Charlie Brown was
laid to rest last week, the victim of a microchip implant gone horribly
wrong. The long-haired, purebred Chihuahua bled to death in the arms of
his distraught owners, Lori and Ed Ginsberg of Agua Dulce, California,
just hours after undergoing the controversial chipping procedure.

"I wasn't in favor of getting Charlie chipped, but it was the law," said
Lori Ginsberg, citing a Los Angeles county ordinance that requires all
dog owners to chip their dogs once they reach four months of age. Dog
owners who refuse to comply face a $250 fine for the first offense and
up to six months in jail for continued non-compliance. "This technology
is supposedly so great until it's your animal that dies," she said. "I
can't believe Charlie is gone. I'm just beside myself."

Dr. Reid Loken, the board certified veterinarian who performed the
chipping, confirmed on Friday that Charlie died from blood loss
associated with the microchip. He cited "an extreme amount of bleeding"
from the "little hole in the skin where the [microchip implant] needle
went in" as the cause of death. He said he was both saddened and puzzled
by Charlie's death.

"I just don't know what happened to him. We put the chip in the back in
the shoulder blades, the standard place where we put them, and there
really aren't any major blood vessels in that area," he said. "I don't
think it went in too deep; it was a pretty routine chipping."

Dr. Loken suspected the needle may have nicked the muscle around the
scapula, causing blood to ooze from the muscle. However, his efforts to
stem the bleeding with pressure bandages were unsuccessful. The bleeding
could not be attributed to a congenital clotting problem, he said, since
Charlie had undergone a neutering and tooth extraction without incident
just weeks before.

Charlie's owners were devastated by the loss. "Charlie loved to play and
cuddle. He brought so much joy and life to our home," said Lori. "We
loved him and took such good care of him. He meant everything to us."

The Ginsbergs were quick to absolve Dr. Loken of responsibility for
Charlie's death. "He's a great vet and this was not his fault. The real
blame is with the people who forced us to implant our dog against our
better judgment," they said.

The Ginsbergs plan to petition the Los Angeles County Board of
Supervisors to repeal the mandatory chipping law, and have sought the
help of prominent consumer privacy advocate Dr. Katherine Albrecht.
Albrecht is a Harvard-trained researcher who has authored a definitive
academic paper citing literature that links microchips with cancer in
dogs as well as laboratory animals. She has also authored an exhaustive,
47-page FAQ on microchip implants.

Albrecht cites other adverse reactions stemming from microchips in the
past. In one case, a struggling kitten died instantly when a microchip
was accidentally injected into its brain stem. In another, a cat was
paralyzed when an implant entered its spinal column. The implants have
been widely reported to migrate within animals' bodies, and can cause
abscesses and infection. In at least two documented cases, dogs have
developed cancerous tumors surrounding or adjacent to microchip
implants.

"Tragedies like what happened to Charlie Brown are probably more common
than we like to think," said Albrecht. "But it takes courageous people
like the Ginsbergs to come forward and talk about it."

Albrecht and the Ginsbergs are calling for a repeal of all mandatory
animal chipping laws nationwide, and for the creation of a national
registry to document adverse reactions from the chipping procedure.

"It's horrible to live in a country where your choices are being take
away and you don't get to make decisions about your family and your life
anymore," said Lori Ginsberg. "Politicians should not take away my right
to do what I thought was best for my pet."

(CNN) -- A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said Friday.

The abandoned infant was found in a field with this dog and her newborn puppies.

A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.

The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, said Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires.

The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.

The dog had apparently carried the baby 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said.

"She took it like a puppy and rescued it," Salcedo said. "The doctors told us if she hadn't done this, he would have died.

"The dog is a hero to us."

Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata, said police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday with the baby, who doctors say was only a few hours old.

Though the infant had superficial scratches and bruises and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said,

Humans have done it again! Check out Mark Schuette's dog walker! It's an ingenious device which allows your dog to get exercise while you just go along for the ride. According to the Oregon man who developed what he calls the "Tadpole" he was just bored while walking his dogs...yeah...right. Mr. Schuette claims that the dogs will get a good workout and that they are not harmed by the use of the dog walker scooter. I think that is probably true. It looks like the dog is enjoying the run and that the woman on the scooter is also enjoying her .... well, we can't say "run" ..... her time on the street with her dog. Instead of your dog pulling your arm out of the socket because you are not the "pack leader" as the Dog Whisperer says, your dog can take you for a ride. You can apparently add 2 of the little harnesses to the scooter and you can theoretically "mush" your way to Walmart. Awesome.

I just hope your dog doesn't spy a squirrel along the way......

We had to take a few minutes out from making Christmas dog collars and Christmas cat collars to share pictures of the adorable twin albino deer that are being fed (along with Mom) by Tim Gillette behind his Cafe in Michigan. The feeder was made just for deer and it took a long time for Tim to actually get photos of the rare Albino deer he had spotted. We aren't going to tell you where in Michigan these deer live or tell you the name of the cafe because we don't want any hunters to try to bag these unusual and beautiful animals. Thank you Tim!

We've all been busy sewing Christmas dog collars, Christmas cat collars, Christmas stockings and Christmas gifts! As you can see, we all have the Christmas spirit except maybe Lola. She would not wear her festive Santa hat and if looks could kill, I guess I'd be at the funeral home right now. Little Chloe Cupcake, our recovering rescue girl, just slept today. The Christmas stockings have been a big success...we've been mixing and matching the fabrics like crazy and having fun making them! We're putting a free "How to make a Christmas stocking" tutorial on the fabric blog so comment me if you are interested.

As you can see, there is plenty of fun to be had at Pets and People, a non-profit animal shelter located in Yukon, Oklahoma. Pets and People takes in animals from kill shelters on the date they are to be executed and gives them a home until they can be placed into a loving, forever home of their very own. We love visitors at Pets and People. The kittens will pull you up a chair, the dogs make sure the orphaned kittens are presentable for prospective adoptive families and there is plenty of playing and fun to be had by all. As you can see from the last picture, interviewing prospective new "assistants" a/k/a new Mom or Dad, is extremely tiring.

Many have heard of the USDA (it’s stamped on organic food labels, meat labels, and other everyday grocery store items), and many have heard of puppy mills. But the fact that puppy mills are regulated by the USDA is a little-known fact to most people.

The US Department of Agriculture seems like a strange entity to be in charge of regulating the puppy industry, but that’s how it works. To be clearer, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) is the arm of the USDA in charge of regulating puppy mills under the Animal Welfare Act. There are currently 5,913 dog breeders and brokers with USDA licenses. People often wonder whether there is a list of all the puppy mills in the country. Well, the USDA is the first place to look.

In April, Oprah Winfrey aired an hour-long show about puppy mills, and the same day, the USDA published a FAQ on animal dealers. Note the paragraph to the right—the first frequently asked question: “who regulates puppy mills?” Answer: the USDA.

What many people also don’t realize is that under the Freedom of Information Act, we are all entitled to view not just a breeder’s name and address, but their inspection reports are included as well. Curious about a breeder? Order their inspection reports. You can do it online by clicking here.

What’s NOT inspected by the USDA?
-Retail pet stores. The USDA only regulates the supply end—the breeders.
-Puppy sales on the Internet, classified ads, flea markets. NO regulation
-Small-scale breeders who have three or fewer breeding female dogs. NO regulation

70 inspectors for 10,000 facilities
In addition to inspecting and watching over commercial dog kennels, APHIS inspectors are also in charge of inspecting research facilities, zoos and circuses, airport terminals—they are in charge of inspecting the care, handling and housing of everything from dogs to dolphins. This document, published on APHIS’ website, has this to say about the inspectors themselves:

“[Animal Care] inspectors receive special training in the proper care of marine mammals, exotic animals, and animals used in research. Inspectors also receive extensive training in how to conduct inspections at airport terminals, zoos, and commercial animal breeding facilities, among others. APHIS currently has more than 70 AC inspectors in the United States, who are strategically placed where regulated facilities are located.”

The total number of active licensed facilities listed on the APHIS website is 9,883. At first glance, seventy inspectors for nearly 10,000 facilities sounds like a miniscule number of people doing a colossal job but if you do the math, it adds up to about one facility per day per inspector.

What compliance means with the AWA
It’s important to note exactly what inspectors are looking for when they arrive at a USDA licensed kennel. Their job is to make sure breeders are adhering to the minimum standards set forth by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). They can look at a facility with hundreds of dogs in small cages, desperate for human attention, and note no violations.

That’s because the AWA does nothing to ensure dogs are happy, or live a quality life. It’s not written into the regulations, and therefore is not something the USDA enforces. Here are some quick facts about the minimum standards set forth by the USDA:
-Inspections are “Risk-based,” meaning that facilities that meet a certain criteria are inspected “as seldom as once every 2 to 3 years.” (source)
-Cage size: must be 6 inches larger than the size of the dog, on all sides
-Up to 12 dogs can be housed in one cage
-Dogs never have to be let out of their cages. Breeders only need to have an exercise plan
-There is no limit to the number dogs a breeder can have—many have over 1,000
-There is no age limit for breeding dogs. If a dog is able to produce puppies for ten years, that’s how long they could be in the facility

Bad Kennels Stay in Business
One of the most common complaints about the USDA from animal advocates is that breeders can have repeated and long-standing violations, but continue to sell hundreds of puppies to pet stores. Below are several reports of large, USDA-licensed Minnesota kennels that have multiple USDA violations and dozens of reports of sick puppies sold in stores. What all this means, and what you can do:
1.) Support new legislation that will amend the Animal Welfare Act. The Puppy Uniform Protection Act (PUPS) is on the docket for the 2008-2009 session. 2.) Watch and share the Best Friends Podcast about the USDA and puppy mills: Click here to view. You can also subscribe to the podcast for regular video updates.

3.) USDA-licensed kennels supply pet stores. If you disagree with the way the USDA regulates these kennels, never, ever buy a puppy from a pet store. Share this article and the podcast with others who might not know about the pet store/puppy mill connection.

4.) Test your knowledge of the USDA’s regulation of puppy mills with this online quiz from www.PetShopPuppies.org

5.) If you know people who don’t understand or believe where pet store puppies come from, print this article and have them take it to a pet store and ask whether the puppies in the store come from USDA-licensed kennels. (The answer—legally—is yes.)

This is little Chloe, a 10 year old rescued shih tzu who has moved in with us as of last night! Chloe has been severely neglected. She has skin problems, is severely malnourished (weighs 10 pounds and should weigh 15 pounds) and has issues with her little bum because she has had so many puppies.

Chloe was spayed, got all her shots, had her heartworm test and her first heartworm pill, was wormed and treated for fleas before she ever came to our home by the fantastic staff at SPOT (Stop Pet Overpopulation Today), a low cost spay and neuter facility sponsored by Volunteers for Animal Welfare. They do a fantastic job here in Oklahoma City to reduce the unwanted animal population. I was shocked to actually hear their assessment of Chloe's condition which is actually worse than I thought. We will be doing a feature story next week on this great facility. Chloe is going for a second follow-up on Tuesday. We will share all that with you. Next is the best picture I could get of Chloe's skin problems. She has lost a lot of her hair and has scabs. Hopefully since she has had treatment for fleas, her skin will start to clear up and her hair will grow back. She smelled so bad and had mud caked in her hair and was full of mats and tangles.

Enter our next hero, Karyl Corder, who is our wonderful groomer. She made time to groom Chloe, did a great job (as always) and took extra time and care with little Chloe. Thank you Karyl! The following are just a few of the Rules for Cats sent to me by my friend Czar's Personal Assistant/Mom. Of course Czar is appropriately named because he rules the house. Here are a few of the rules cats live by:

Humans:
Humans have three primary functions: to feed us, to play with and give attention to us, and to clean the litter box. It is important to maintain one's Dignity when around humans so that they will not forget who is the master of the house. Humans need to know basic rules. They can be taught if you start early and are consistent.

Walking:
As often as possible, dart quickly and as close as possible in front of the human, especially on stairs, when they have something in their arms, in the dark, and when they first get up in the morning. This will help their coordination skills.

Doors:
Do not allow closed doors in any room. To get door opened, stand on hind legs and hammer with forepaws. Once door is opened, it is not necessary to use it. After you have ordered an "outside" door opened, stand halfway in and out and think about several things. This is particularly important during very cold weather, rain, snow, or mosquito season. Watching the Oprah show today was hard to do. Of course the photos shown were not the horrific ones that I have seen before but were plenty bad enough. The farmers who were interviewed who ran big "factory farms" were interesting to watch. Click on Oprah's picture above to watch a clip and read about the show.

I do not eat meat or use animal skin or products in my work or my personal life. That is a decision I made rather late in life after I became aware of what happens to the animals we kill and eat. I do not wish to support the factory farms that are prevalent today. I believe that these animals are cruelly treated.

PUPPY MILLS ON OPRAH AGAIN!

Yesterday Oprah had a puppy mill update on her show for Puppy Mill Awareness Week. The little guy pictured here from the Oprah show is H.B. This is a quote from Oprah.com:

Bill and Oprah are joined by H.B., a Pomeranian rescued by Main Line Animal Rescue from a puppy mill in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Bill says dogs like H.B. are the reason laws need to be changed. "He had his leg cut off with a pair of tin snips," he says. "He got his leg caught on the wire flooring of his rabbit hutch. Most of these animals are kept in rabbit hutches and stacked. A dog below him grabbed his leg and it became swollen and the farmer, instead of cutting the wire, he cut his leg off. And that's typical. … He's also missing an ear, probably from a dog fight because he was in a cage with another 12 dogs. He's the sweetest thing in the world."

Our own little Lola was rescued from a filthy puppy mill with horrific conditions. The dogs there were in such bad shape that only half survived. Lola, like so many victims of puppy mills, was in a rabbit hutch type cage and had obviously never even been on grass or gone down stairs. It is so gratifying to see a dog go from timid and terrified to a confident and sassy. You can click on Lola's picture and read her story.

Puppy mill dogs are bred for volume and not for quality. Many expensive and heartbreaking health problems do not show up in a puppy for 60 days and by then it's too late. You have fallen in love. There are many pure bred dogs (like Charlie and Lola) in rescues. A reputable rescue will make sure that the dog is healthy before it is adopted out or will disclose any known health problems.

JACK'S HALLOWEEN CAT COLLAR!

Take a look at Jack, the magnificent black emperor cat sporting his new Candy Corn Comfy Cat Halloween Collar! Jack looks fabulous in his new Halloween cat collar which is made from the cat size version of the candy corn collar. Jack's human assistant, a/k/a Jen, rescued Jack from a shelter in Dekalb, IL.

Jack caught her eye because he was a sweetheart, purring up a storm and rubbing his head on her hand through his tiny cubby. She was shocked to discover that Jack had been at the shelter for over a year! He had been dumped at a local vet on Christmas Eve after being taken there for a surgical procedure and was never picked up. Jack had suffered the cruelty of a four paw declaw which is probably the procedure for which he was sent to the vet where he was abandoned. Sadly there are many people who love the cuteness of a little kitten but who aren't informed about cat ownership and all that it entails.

Jack has now trained his human assistant and is now king of his domain. As you can see, he is surrounded by his own personal cat toys, he has his own box to play with and his own home to roam around in. His human is completely in love with him and they are a match made in Heaven living happily ever after. Jack, you are one of our favorite Comfy Collars' models!

PLEASE check your pet's toy box for this "Pimple Ball" toy made by Four Paws, Inc. (Item #20227-001, UPC Code 04566320227 9). This ball has caused serious injury to dogs by creating a vacuum which sucks in the tongue into the hole in the ball. Dogs have had to have their tongues surgically removed and their lives and the lives of their owners have changed forever. Although this toy has caused more than one pet to sustain life-altering injuries, the company has refused to recall the item or quit manufacturing. You can get the email address of this company and a "copy and paste" notice to the company demanding a recall by clicking on Chai's blog.

Daisy, my adorable and sweet granddog has moved to a new house! My daughter (Daisy's human assistant and mommy) and her husband moved into this gorgeous new home just so that Daisy would have some room to roam....well, that's why Daisy thinks they moved. Here she is in her Retro Blue dog collar from Comfy Collars (of course) surveying her new back yard! She has lots of trees in her new yard and has found tons of interesting wildlife that she didn't have in her urban yard. Daisy says "Two Paws Up" to the suburbs! Daisy's sister dog, Cleo, was under the chair....not so happy about the wildlife. More adventures of Daisy and Cleo to come....

PRETTY IN PINK

The lovely Brooke, a Great Dane mix fashionista, LOVES anything pink and sparkly! She just had to have one of the Comfy Collars retro 70's dog collars that is made from hip, fashion forward pink designer fabric. Brooke looks fabulous in this striking pink dog collar but, as you can see in her second picture, she does get easily bored with all the paparazzi attention. Brooke's mother was rescued by Last Chance Rescue, a non-profit rescue, while she was pregnant. Brooke and her siblings were born but, sadly, their Mom did not live long after. Brooke has overcome her tragic beginnings by allowing some human assistants to adopt her and shower her with love and gifts. Brooke's interests are shopping, swimming, running and keeping her assistants' home clean by picking clothing up from the floor. As you can see, Brooke's career as a supermodel is off to a great start. Comfy Collars is happy to have you as a celebrity customer!

Here's a list my friend sent me of companies that do animal testing. I was surprised by some of them because they were products that I used and I had no idea that cruel animal testing was done. Even in situations where the animal is not tortured, they are kept in cages and have no interaction or affection from their keepers. They are considered objects so they never learn to relate to humans or sometimes other animals. If you have ever seen an animal that was rescued from an animal testing situation, you would be shocked and saddened. The website listed in this tableau is a protest against Proctor & Gamble and I don't recommend or warn against it--it just came with the list. Just thought I would pass this list along in case you didn't know. I no longer buy these products.

Our own little Lola, the puppy mill rescue dog, is getting ready for Halloween fun! She wore this "Good Witch" outfit last year (for about 3 minutes) and was treated by everyone who saw her! This year she will be wearing one of the Comfy Collars candy corn dog collars. We are still looking for costumes for Charlie and Lola for this year. Of course, we will be posting pics all over the place when (and if) we get them in a new costume! Charlie wants a "sleeping shih tzu" costume....

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR PETS

Halloween can be a traumatic and even dangerous time for your pet. Ms. Jacque Schultz, ASPCA Director of Companion Animal Services, offers some common-sense tips to protect your pet on Halloween:

Don't leave your pet out in the yard on Halloween: There are plenty of stories of vicious pranksters who have teased, injured, stolen, even killed pets on this night.
Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets: Chocolate is poisonous to a lot of animals, and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed.
Be careful of pets around a lit pumpkin: Pets may knock it over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned.
Don't dress the dog in costume unless you know he loves it. Otherwise, it puts a lot of stress on the animal.
If you do dress up your dog, make sure the costume isn't constricting, annoying or unsafe. Be careful not to obstruct her vision
even the sweetest dogs can get snappy when they can't see what's going on around them.
All but the most social dogs should be kept in a separate room during trick-or-treat visiting hours; too many strangers in strange garb can be scary for a dog.
Be careful your cat or dog doesn't dart out through the open door.

While this can be a fun time for people and pets alike, remember that your pets are depending on you to keep them safe from the more dangerous goblins and ghouls that this holiday brings.
